“The 8 assessment focuses (AFs) for writing describe thekeyelements of performance in this attainment target. They are linked to the National Curriculum programmes of study and the level descriptions and are designed to give a detailed, analytic view of pupils’ attainment across all the key stages and in all types of writing.” -

Alan will present a range of PRACTICAL ideas to ensure whole school consistency in this key area ofthe raising standards agenda.
“Raising Non Fiction Writing Standards, the Whole School ‘Success’ Approach” provides teachers with proven, effective strategies to help improve pupils’ writing in this vital aspect of the literacy curriculum.
SUCCESS
During the day, Alan will explain and expand on ideas from his bestselling book: Improving Non-Fiction Writing at Key Stages 1 and 2: the Success Approach (Nash Pollock Publishing).
Lynn Houston, from Anglesey Primary School, Lozells, Birmingham said in an email to Alan:
“Just a little note to let you know how the SATs went. We’re really delighted with the results. What I’m most pleased about is the difference made in Years 3, 4 and 5 by the use of the adapted frames from SUCCESS. About 40% of Year 5 are already operating at Level 4 – this will make our job in Year 6 much less pressured next year. Your ‘whole school’ approach is doing the trick. You’ve made a big difference to a lot of children – I feel you should know that.”
Alan Peat has an international reputation for INSET and conference teacher training which make a real difference to standards in writing and reading.
Many teachers have already used the SUCCESS approach and report that it really has led to their pupils gaining greater understanding of non-fiction forms and improved the standard of their writing. It follows the key principles of Assessment for Learning by providing specific objectives for pupils’ learning, clear success criteria and self & peer evaluation as an integral part of the writing process.
The acronym SUCCESS is used because the approach provides Structural Understanding, Confident Composition and Evaluation of Self. Through a clear focus on these three key areas, pupils gain confidence across the full range of non-fiction text forms.
The course provides participants with practical whole school and classroom approaches for teaching all of the non-fiction text forms included in the Literacy Framework. Links to the end of Key Stage 2 SAT will also be made throughout the day.
Participants will gain:
NOT TO BE MISSED by literacy leaders, KS1 and KS2 teachers or anyone interested in the fundamental importance of making reading enjoyable and engaging.
This programme includes:
If you are wanting professional development on reading that isn’t just reliant on phonics and which enables a ‘whole school’ approach based on exciting pedagogy then this conference is for you!
...to imbue our children with a love of reading – we get ourselves hot and bothered about the teaching
of reading, about synthetic phonics... ... and we forget that none of it is much use unless children really want to read in the first place.

IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR CHILDREN’S NARRATIVE WRITING—WITHOUT PUTTING
THEM OFF WRITING COMPLETELY—THIS IS THE COURSE FOR YOU!
One of Alan’s most popular and effective courses, RAISING NARRATIVE WRITING STANDARDS: THE WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH starts with the youngest pupils in primary schools and Alan’s game to develop ‘story sense’ - ‘Boxing Clever’. In an ideas-packed day, with material for ALL year groups, Alan will cover:
Dear Alan, Please find attached our Ofsted report! As you can see we've been judged outstanding!! We are, needless to say, delighted that everyone's hard work and
dedication have been acknowledged in such a lovely report.
The team were very impressed with the work that they saw going on with "Boxing Clever" and acknowledged it in the report.”

A MUST FOR ALL EARLY YEARS TEACHERS!
Participants will be given a wealth of practical new ideas which can be used in the busy classroom to enhance pupils' understanding of the writing process. A particular feature of the day will be how to link early reading and writing experiences more closely. Participants will also learn how to better develop the pupils' sense of story and non-fiction forms.
Developing a 'story' sense
Using Alan's ’Boxing Clever’ game, participants will learn how to 'make' stories with Nursery and Reception age pupils so that they physically sequence all the elements of narrative. Joint book making activities which relate to this will also be explored. Alan will expand on the game to show how it can be adapted with pupils in Y1 and Y2 as well as modelling simplified versions for use in Nursery classes.
Writing for a range of purposes (writing with children!)
Listing opportunities, early instructional writing; shifting the 'accent' from mark making to meaning.
Links will be made to a range of the stepping stones as well as Level 1-3 criteria.
Analysing pupils' writing to inform future progress Nursery—Y2
The session uses examples of early writing and considers practical strategies for assisting writers from the pre-phonemic stage through to Level 2/3
Making early writing fun!
If we want to raise standards we need to make the process of writing fun! Alan will consider early collaborative writing games, ways the teacher can model the writing process and methods of increasing the impact of writing in a structured 'play' context.
A whole day of inspirational maths ideas!
This conference will enable teachers to experience a varied and FUN selection of ideas to help primary aged children recall facts quickly and use them appropriately in other calculations.
The two sessions on ‘recall’ and ‘playing with numbers’ will give participants a wealth of new ideas and strategies to use in their classroom to develop a repertoire of mental calculation techniques and trickery!
The day includes:
WHOLE SCHOOL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Can you pass my thanks to Alan for an excellent day yesterday? He really enthused the staff and having spoken to a number of them since yesterday afternoon, they are chomping at the bit to try some of his ideas out!
The delivery, materials and approach was of the highest quality.
Thanks once again.

Of the 24 lower middles across the year group - 1As and 2Cs - only 4 didn't make 2B. We are thrilled. Even the SEN group are now secure level 1s, they were 'P' levels at the beginning of the year - so THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
