ASSESSING PUPIL PROGRESS IN WRITING

Aim: To ‘unpick’ AF 5-8 AND, for the first time, provide ALL participants with LEVELLED teaching strategies which will facilitate transition from level 1-2 / 2-3 / 3-4 and 4-5 thereby moving participants towards a WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH to all of the writing elements included in APP.

This programe includes:

AF5	Vary sentences for clarity, purpose and effect
AF6	Write with technical accuracy of syntax and punctuation in phrases, clauses and sentences
AF7	Select appropriate and effective vocabulary
AF8	Use correct spelling

Alan will present a range of PRACTICAL ideas to ensure whole school consistency in this key area ofthe raising standards agenda.

They will gain the confidence to make APP in Writing a valuable aspect of the ‘Raising Writing Standards’ agenda.

The Whole School ‘Success’ Approach

“Raising Non Fiction Writing Standards, the Whole School ‘Success’ Approach” provides teachers with proven, effective strategies to help improve pupils’ writing in this vital aspect of the literacy curriculum.

SUCCESS
During the day, Alan will explain and expand on ideas from his bestselling book: Improving Non-Fiction Writing at Key Stages 1 and 2: the Success Approach (Nash Pollock Publishing).
Lynn Houston, from Anglesey Primary School, Lozells, Birmingham said in an email to Alan:

What I’m most pleased about is the difference made in Years 3, 4 and 5 by the use of the adapted frames from SUCCESS. Many teachers have already used the SUCCESS approach and report that it really has led to their pupils gaining greater understanding of non-fiction forms and improved the standard of their writing. It follows the key principles of Assessment for Learning by providing specific objectives for pupils’ learning, clear success criteria and self & peer evaluation as an integral part of the writing process.

The acronym SUCCESS is used because the approach provides Structural Understanding, Confident Composition and Evaluation of Self. Through a clear focus on these three key areas, pupils gain confidence across the full range of non-fiction text forms.

The course provides participants with practical whole school and classroom approaches for teaching all of the non-fiction text forms included in the Literacy Framework. Links to the end of Key Stage 2 SAT will also be made throughout the day.

Nursery—Y2

A MUST FOR ALL EARLY YEARS TEACHERS!

Participants will be given a wealth of practical new ideas which can be used in the busy classroom to enhance pupils' understanding of the writing process. A particular feature of the day will be how to link early reading and writing experiences more closely. Participants will also learn how to better develop the pupils' sense of story and non-fiction forms.

Developing a 'story' sense
Using Alan's ’Boxing Clever’ game, participants will learn how to 'make' stories with Nursery and Reception age pupils so that they physically sequence all the elements of narrative. Joint book making activities which relate to this will also be explored. Alan will expand on the game to show how it can be adapted with pupils in Y1 and Y2 as well as modelling simplified versions for use in Nursery classes.

Writing for a range of purposes (writing with children!)
Listing opportunities, early instructional writing; shifting the 'accent' from mark making to meaning.

Links will be made to a range of the stepping stones as well as Level 1-3 criteria.

Analysing pupils' writing to inform future progress Nursery—Y2
The session uses examples of early writing and considers practical strategies for assisting writers from the pre-phonemic stage through to Level 2/3

Making early writing fun!
If we want to raise standards we need to make the process of writing fun! Alan will consider early collaborative writing games, ways the teacher can model the writing process and methods of increasing the impact of writing in a structured 'play' context.

This conference will enable teachers to experience a varied and FUN selection of ideas to help primary aged children recall facts quickly and use them appropriately in other calculations.
