AnyWord XWord started life as an idea from Alan’s training. But it soon became its own dedicated app before we produced a photocopiable book with 100 grids to try with your class.

Anyword Crossword is a crossword with no clues. To begin, any word can be placed on the crossword. It sounds easy but it gets harder as you progress through the levels.

Here’s an example of a completed grid. Try it! It sounds simple. The idea really is simple. But the game is not!!!

At its simplest, it’s a vocab challenge to make the words all fit in the grid. But you can extend the game far beyond that by introducing your own rules – for example, all words must be linked to your topic on the Tudors…
