A Whole School Approach to Mastery in Mathematics

This course will provide a coherent whole-school approach for developing a mastery maths curriculum, where key areas of learning are explored in depth. Using research from different fields, strategies for helping children to develop a deep, conceptual understanding of mathematics are explored. There will be a focus on the use of visual models and images to promote understanding, questions and activities that promote reasoning and problem-solving and the active use of assessment to improve learning outcomes. Training sessions are designed to meet the bespoke needs of the school or a cluster of schools, and can include:

  • A whole-school approach to promoting positive learning dispositions in maths
  • Exploring the key stages of development in early understanding of number
  • The effective use of models and images to promote deep understanding
  • Structuring a ‘mastery’ curriculum to explore each concept in greater depth
  • Looking at a range of techniques and resources for deepening mathematical reasoning
  • A coherent approach to the teaching of problem-solving

 

Mastery in KS2 Mathematics

This course will show how a deep mastery maths curriculum can be built in KS2, with an array of examples and activities provided that are specific to the needs of KS2 teachers. We will look at how to explore key mathematical concepts in depth, supported by resources and examples that allow teachers to extend learning. There is a focus on how visual models and images can be used to promote understanding for children of all ages and abilities, and how to challenge children to reason and problem-solve on a daily basis. Training sessions are designed to meet the bespoke needs of the school or a cluster of schools, and can include:

  • Promoting positive learning dispositions and structures for talk in maths
  • The effective use of models and images to promote deep understanding
  • Strategies for addressing common misconceptions
  • Structuring a ‘mastery’ curriculum to explore each concept in greater depth
  • Looking at a range of techniques and resources for deepening mathematical reasoning
  • A coherent approach to the teaching of problem-solving skills

 

Mastery in EYFS and KS1 Mathematics

This course will examine best practice in Early Years and KS1 mathematics. It will identify the developmental stages that children progress through in order to develop early calculation skills. Through the use of visual models, equipment and images we will explore how children develop a strong and flexible understanding of number, developing early mastery of key maths concepts. A range of practical strategies and tasks will be introduced, allowing children to experience a rich, practical and enjoyable maths curriculum that will lead to them developing a deep understanding of the subject. Training includes:

  • An examination of early research into building calculation skills
  • A multi-layered approach to develop positive dispositions towards mathematics
  • Using visual models and images to develop children’s understanding and feel for number
  • How to develop key calculation concepts in addition, subtraction multiplication and division
  • Incorporating reasoning and problem-solving skills within daily lessons

 

Mastery in Greater Depth in Primary Mathematics

This course will explore different ways in which we can enrich mathematical experiences for more able learners, deepen their understanding and develop their ability to reason in mathematics. It will look at how learning sequences can be developed that challenge children in different ways, providing deep and meaningful mathematical challenges. A range of resources will be shared, enabling teachers to sustain a rich, inspiring maths curriculum. Training includes:

  • A model for promoting positive learning dispositions and high quality talk for able children
  • A range of strategies for creating challenge and extending reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Suggestions for how to apply maths learning flexibly in a range of contexts
  • Links to a range of excellent and varied resources
  • Practical strategies for facilitating meta-cognitive thinking in mathematics

 

G&T Maths at KS2: Extending and Enriching

This course will explore different ways in which we can enrich mathematical experiences for more able learners and deepen their understanding of mathematics. It will critically evaluate the characteristics and needs of these children, and look at practical ways that these needs can be met on a day-to-day basis.

The course will include:

  • An examination of best practice by looking at academic research
  • Guidance on how to develop effective attitudes towards learning
  • Different strategies for creating appropriate challenges in the classroom
  • Suggestions for how to make real-life links in mathematics
  • Links to a range of excellent and varied resources
  • Practical strategies for facilitating meta-cognitive thinking in mathematics

 

The Mathematics Apprenticeship

This course will provide a practical guide to running The Mathematics Apprenticeship. Teachers will be introduced to the resource, and receive guidance on how to roll the tasks out to maximise their impact in the classroom.

The course will include:

  • The guiding principles of running The Mathematics Apprenticeship
  • The outcomes that you can expect for the children in your class
  • The best way to build the tasks into your current curriculum
  • How to deliver the tasks - practical considerations
  • How to provide effective feedback in order to maximise learning
